My Profile, Recommended Channels and 15 More Features

My Profile, Recommended Channels and 15 More Features

Introducing My Profile, Recommended Channels and 15 More Features

This month we've added more than 15 new features, including recommended channels, a way to view your own profile and display your channel and birthday on your page, improved moderation tools for group admins – and much more.

Recommended Channels

The search interface has a new 'Channels' tab that shows the channels you follow. The tab also has a list of recommended channels with similar topics where you can discover new content creators.

When viewing posts from a channel, you can pull up to jump to the next unread channel in your list. After hopping through all your channels, you can keep scrolling to browse recommended channels.

Channel recommendations are based only on the general topic of channels you already subscribe to. So any predominance of particular types of vegetables or fruit is entirely on you.

My Profile

Your Settings now have a 'My Profile' section that allows you to view your profile as it appears to other users – and quickly edit or change any information.

You can now pin up to 3 stories to the top of your profile page – to showcase your achievements or make sure nobody misses that cat in a suit you met in an elevator.

We've also added little icons that show the privacy settings of your posted stories, so you can quickly see if they need adjustments.

Birthdays

Anyone can choose to add their birthday to their profile – letting all their contacts know when to bring gifts. On your birthday, anyone who visits your profile will be greeted with animated confetti and plenty of balloons.

When it's someone else's birthday, a banner appears in your chat list – so you won't forget to congratulate them. Don't worry if you forgot their gift, you can tap the banner to quickly send a subscription to Telegram Premium.

By default, your date of birth is only visible to your contacts. Like other information on your profile, birthdays have granular privacy settings which you can control via Settings > Privacy and Security > Date of Birth.

Channels on Your Profile

If you own a channel, you can now add it to your profile page. This places a detailed preview of the latest post above your bio – sending visitors to your personal project, online portfolio or company blog in one tap.

Channels on Your Profile

Collectibles on Your Profile

Owners of collectible usernames can link them to their Telegram account or channels – listing the extra names on the profile page.

Tapping a collectible username or anonymous number on someone's profile now pulls up extra info about the collectible – like when it was acquired and for how much.

Collectibles on Your Profile

Collectibles can be bought and sold on the Fragment platform, which uses the TON blockchain.

Share Location Indefinitely

When meeting up with friends or taking a trip, you can share your live location with individual users or entire group chats. This lets others follow your journey – or even set an alert for when you arrive.

Now you can add more time to an existing shared location. And if you want friends and family to keep track of your movements for extended periods, there is a new option to share your location with them indefinitely, until you turn it off.

To start sharing your location, open the attachment menu in a private chat or a group and select Location > Share My Live Location for….

Reaction Notification Settings

We've added new settings that let you control notifications for reactions to your messages.

Reaction Notification Settings

This update also introduces notifications about reactions to your stories, so you will never miss a heart again. (Or a flame. Or a thumbs up. Or a… pigeon? Whatever that means.)

The new settings are available in Settings > Notifications and Sounds > Reactions.

Profile Pictures in Forwarded Messages

Forwarded messages now show the profile picture of the user from whom they were forwarded. This makes them more recognizable in the chat – and makes it easier to read forwarded conversations with multiple authors.

Profile Pictures in Forwarded Messages

If you limit who can link back to your account when forwarding, your profile picture will not appear on messages forwarded from you.

Tip: On Telegram, you can set a separate public photo that will be displayed to users you don't know.

Premium: Animated Emoji in Polls

Premium users can now include animated and custom emoji in polls. At long last, democracy can help decide whether animated ducks are better than static cats.

Mass Moderation for Groups

Group admins can now select several messages and perform multiple moderation actions at the same time – in a new menu with individual toggles for each user and action to maximize efficiency.

The menu also has options to restrict user permissions instead of banning them from the community right away.

Admins of groups with 200+ members can also enable aggressive spam filtering to automatically detect and restrict problematic users in their chat.

Improved Recent Actions

The Recent Actions section lets group admins view notable events that took place in the chat in the past 48 hours, like deleted or edited messages and admin activity.

With this update, recent actions are now more compact, with similar actions by the same admin grouped together. Admins can also see replies and to which topics recent action messages belong.

Improved Recent Actions

We also fixed text highlighting when you search recent actions – now it works just as well as when you search in regular Telegram chats.

Reaction Management for Channels

Channel admins now have an extra way to manage reactions – selecting a maximum number of reaction types each post can have to keep things tidy.

This allows channels to frequently change their available reactions (like adding something relevant for a holiday), without a bunch of Easter bunnies popping up on past posts.

Premium: Unhide Ads

By default, subscribing to Telegram Premium hides ads in channels. If you wish to still see them – either to check your own ads or help channels earn rewards, there is a new toggle to show sponsored messages in Settings > Telegram Business.

Unhide Ads

Premium: Open Stories Anonymously

While viewing stories, Premium users can activate Stealth Mode in the story menu to hide their recent views and continue hiding views for the next 25 minutes.

Now you can also activate Stealth Mode from the chat list – simply press and hold a story in your feed and select 'View Anonymously'. This opens the story without adding you to the list of viewers even for a second, and also turns on Stealth Mode.

Open Stories Anonymously

Swipe for Next Topic

When browsing groups that have topics enabled, you can pull up at the bottom of the chat to go to the next unread topic.

Swipe for Next Topic

Instant View on Telegram Desktop

Telegram's cross-platform Desktop app now supports Instant View for websites – opening the page and all its media directly in your app with zero load times.

Instant View on Telegram Desktop

If you ever find errors on an Instant View page, scroll to the bottom and tap 'Wrong Layout?' to send us feedback.

Rewards for Creators

A new reward system has launched for channel owners – sharing 50% of the revenue from ads shown in their channels. Withdrawals on Fragment are already available for eligible channels – with no fees.

Users can promote their channel or bot by creating sponsored messages on the Telegram Ad Platform – powered by the TON blockchain.

900 Million Users

Telegram continues to be one of the most-used and most-downloaded apps in the world – and now has more than 900 million monthly active users. To read more about this major milestone and what the future holds for Telegram, see this post by our CEO and founder.

Sticker Editor — Create Your Own Stickers

2024-04-14 20:37:40

Sticker Editor — Create Your Own Stickers

Sticker Editor

Starting today, anyone can quickly create stickers and entire sticker sets using a new powerful editor — without leaving Telegram.

Make a Sticker

Just take any photo and add text, drawings — or countless animated stickers, emojis and GIFs that exist on the platform. Turning cats into visual art has never been easier in the history of humankind (and catkind).

It takes just one tap to cut out objects and remove the background. You can manually erase and restore parts of your photo – or add an outline for that classic sticker look.

Create Sticker button

To start making stickers, open the sticker panel from your input field in any chat, then tap the inviting (+) button.

Add It to a Set

When you're done, simply send the sticker – or create a sticker set so that friends can reuse your cut-out cats in their chats.

To add a sticker to a set, choose the emojis that describe its emotion. Telegram will also use AI to suggest you emoji based on your image — like a cat, dog, or car.

On Telegram, emojis act as shortcuts for stickers. When you type an emoji in a chat, Telegram automatically offers matching stickers you can send.

Expand your Set

Since 2015, millions of artists and meme-makers have been using Telegram's open platform to share their creations.

You can add any existing stickers to your custom sets. For example, to bring all your favorites together in one pack — or to create themed collections.

Share your Sets

To share your sticker sets, just send someone one of the stickers. They can tap it to add the whole set. Each set also has its unique t.me link.

With this update, we've added neat link previews for all sticker and emoji sets.

We'll also announce 16 more new features this month, but first — don't you have some stickers to make?

Introducing Telegram Business

2024-04-01 00:32:30

Introducing Telegram Business

Introducing Telegram Business

Starting today, anyone can turn their Telegram account into a business account – and get access to business features, such as opening hours, location, quick replies, automated messages, custom start page, chatbot support, and more.

Introducing Telegram Business

Telegram has long allowed developers to build powerful bots and mini-apps which were widely used by businesses.

Starting today, any user can easily use business features — without any coding skills.

Hours and Location

Businesses can display their hours of operation and show their location on a map.

Users will know where to find you and immediately see if you're open.

Start Page

Businesses can customize their start page for empty chats, choosing which text and sticker people see before they start a conversation.

This lets you showcase info about products and services or welcome customers with branded artwork.

Quick Replies

Telegram Business allows you to create quick replies. Quick replies are shortcuts for sending preset messages that may contain several messages and support text formatting, links, stickers, media, and files.

This helps you quickly send information that your customers often need – like a schedule of classes or a PDF with your menu.

Typing a / in the message bar shows a panel with all of your quick replies – that you can send or edit in one tap. This only works in private chats, not groups.

Greeting Messages

For more automation, you can set a greeting message that will be sent to users who contact you for the first time. This will ensure they get an instant reply with important info – or just a friendly hello. 👋

Your greeting may also include answers to frequent questions or more details about your business.

You can specify a period after which a new message will result in your greeting being sent again.

Away Messages

You can also set an away message to be sent when your business is closed or while you're on vacation.

This way people will always know when they can expect a response from your business.

To prevent sending business messages to friends, family, or employees, you can limit any automated messages to exclude specific chats or entire chat categories.

Tags for Chats

With Telegram Business or Premium, you can add colored labels to chats, giving them unique tags based on the chat folders they are in.

This helps you quickly differentiate between customers in your chat list based on their status, needs, or priority level.

All Telegram users can create custom chat folders to organize their chats – adding separate tabs to the chat list for Work, School, News and more.

Links to Chat

To make it even easier for customers to reach out, you can create links to chat with your business – like a button to reserve a table or track an order. When tapped, these links instantly open a chat with you and paste a suggested message for the user.

You can use these links both inside and outside of Telegram – from a link on your site to a QR code on a restaurant menu.

Each link shows how many times it was tapped so you can track its performance.

Chatbots for Business

Business users can connect Telegram bots that will process and answer messages on their behalf. This allows businesses to seamlessly integrate any existing tools and workflows, or add AI assistants that manage their chats.

When adding a chatbot, you can configure which chats the bot can access – such as excluding all chats with your contacts, or only responding to new chats.

This opens a new era for Telegram Bots – we welcome all developers to create new services that will help businesses automate and improve their communication with Telegram users. See our Bot Manuals for details.

Telegram will be introducing new features for businesses in the coming updates. For the moment, all Telegram Business features are available for free to Premium subscribers. You can find them in Settings > Telegram Business.

Sharing Revenue with Channel Owners

2024-04-01 00:30:04

Sharing Revenue with Channel Owners

Sharing Revenue with Channel Owners

Today, we're introducing one of the most generous reward systems in the history of social media. Telegram channel owners can now receive 50% of the revenue from ads displayed in their channels.

Rewards for Creators

Telegram users generate over 1 trillion views in channels every month. Starting today, owners of public channels with at least 1000 subscribers can be rewarded with 50% of the revenue from ads displayed in their channels.

Monetization stats of a channel

Channel owners can withdraw their rewards with no fees – or reinvest them into Telegram ads, collectible usernames or Premium giveaways.

Go to Channel Settings > Statistics > Monetization to see your channel's monetization stats. Withdrawals for channel owners will be via Fragment. You can find the full terms and conditions here.

TON-based Ads

To make this possible, we're introducing a new type of ads, which users can purchase with Toncoins – a cryptocurrency powered by the TON Blockchain.

We chose the TON Blockchain because it has low fees, high transaction speeds – and holds a record for the number of transactions it can process per second.

Anyone can now promote their bot or channel – with budgets as low as a handful of Toncoins. When creating a Telegram ad, you choose the exact channels where you'd like it to appear, so you have full control over their context.

Creating a TON-based ad

To get started, simply log in on the Telegram Ad Platform.

Why Telegram Ads Are Special

Telegram ads are very different from ads on other apps. They are shown only in large public channels. They never appear in your chats, chat list or other interfaces.

Telegram ads are not based on user data. They depend only on the channel in which you see them – and they directly benefit channel owners.

Telegram ad in a large channel

We understand that not everyone likes ads, even if they support content creators. Luckily, on Telegram anyone can turn off ads by subscribing to Telegram Premium – and get dozens of exclusive features, including new Telegram Business features.

Stories for Groups and 8 More Features

Stories for Groups and 8 More Features

Stories for Groups and 8 More Features

Telegram brings conversation in groups to an entire new level with 9 new features that redefine many-to-many communication. Now, groups can publish stories and save them as posts on their profile pages. Groups can set unique wallpapers and statuses, as well as customize their appearance down to the finest details, including the color and logo of the group’s profile cover or link style. All these features are already available and may be unlocked by group members who can boost their favorite chats. Such boosted groups can now also offer Voice-to-Text conversion and premium Custom Emoji to their members.

Boosts for Groups

Groups can now gain levels thanks to boosts from members or giveaways. In addition to group stories and custom appearance, higher levels give members access to premium features like voice-to-text and custom emoji when messaging inside the group.

Stories from Groups

This update introduces a novel way of communication in groups, where admins can now post stories. Replies from members will be sent to the group, sparking new conversations.

To post a story as your group, either tap the story icon (+) on the group's profile or select the group in the 'Post Story As' section of the story editor.

Emoji Status, Covers, Wallpapers, and Link Styles

Boosted groups support unique customization options, which are available only on Telegram. You can change the color and logo of your group's profile cover, set an emoji status, and choose a wallpaper that will be visible to all who open the group.

For their emoji status, groups can select from the thousands of emoji made by Telegram artists, adding anything from an animated gamepad to a cryptic eggplant next to the group name.

To customize your group, open its profile and select Edit > Appearance. The group's level determines which appearance settings are available.

Group Emoji Packs

Higher-level groups unlock some Telegram Premium features for communication inside the chat.

Admins can choose one pack of custom emoji that all members are allowed to use in the group – even if they don't have Telegram Premium.

You can choose an emoji set made by Telegram artists or create a unique pack just for your group chat.

Voice-to-Text and More

Members of boosted groups can also enjoy unlimited voice-to-text transcription for voice and video messages sent in the group.

This is just the beginning – future updates will add even more features to power up your group chat.

A list of all the group perks available at every level can be found here.

Permissions for Boosters

Messages from users who boosted the group show a special Booster Badge, which evolves with every boost sent. Admins can apply special permissions for boosters, giving them unique privileges, like ignoring Slow Mode or other restrictions.

Permissions for Boosters

Telegram Premium includes 4 boosts that can be assigned to any group or channel – and you get 3 more boosts each time you give Premium as a gift.

We planned to include 5 more features in this update, but the App Store Gods were not in our favor. But that’s OK — you’ll see these features very soon in our March update!

Saved Messages 2.0, One-Time Voice Messages and 8 More Features

2024-02-01 02:31:29

Saved Messages 2.0, One-Time Voice Messages and 8 More Features

Throughout January, we added 10 new features to Telegram – including upgraded Saved Messages, one-time voice and video messages that delete after playing, detailed read receipts that show what time your message was read, and much more.

Saved Messages 2.0

Every Telegram user has a chat called Saved Messages, a place for notes, reminders, and messages forwarded from other chats.

This update turns Saved Messages into a powerful storage system for your links, media, and bookmarks. You can now view your saved messages by chat or as a compact list, organize them with tags, and use the new 'Saved' tab in Shared Media to access messages you saved from any particular chat.

View Saved Messages by Chat

The new View as Chats mode lets you see a list of private chats, groups, and channels from which you've forwarded messages. You can pin any of these chats to the top.

To switch views, simply tap the title in your Saved Messages. You can also tap ⋮ / ⋯ and select 'View as Messages' or 'View as Chats' – in this case, Saved Messages will be shown in the selected mode the next time you open them.

Premium Tags for Saved Messages

For even more organization, you can add multiple tags to your Saved Messages that let you quickly filter them in Search.

Because tags are based on emoji, adding a tag is as easy as adding a reaction, but tags can also have names. Tags are already available to all Telegram Premium users.

To search in your Saved Messages, tap the 🔍 icon in the top corner. Your tags will appear under the search bar – simply tap to filter your search by that tag.

Saved Messages in Shared Media

Chats, groups, and channels all have a shared media section to swiftly access photos, links, music, and more. This update adds a new 'Saved' tab as well, containing any messages from that chat that you've forwarded to your Saved Messages.

Upgraded Search

We've improved searching in all chats, and now it's easier to navigate your search results and view them as a compact list.

Tip: The fastest way to open search in any chat is by tap and hold on its title.

One-Time Voice and Video Messages

The View-Once setting is now available for voice and video messages. Such messages can only be played one time before they are automatically deleted – with an animation that will make you want to send them again and again.

To record a view-once message, hold down and then swipe up to lock recording, then tap the view-once icon before sending.

Pause and Resume Recording

While recording any voice or video message, you can now pause and then resume recording later – instead of sending multiple messages.

To pause, swipe up to lock recording and tap the pause ⏸️ button. To resume recording, simply tap the microphone or camera icon again.

Read Time in Private Chats

When you send a message, 1 check (✓) means it was delivered, while 2 checks (✓✓) mean it was read – and in 1-on-1 chats, you can now see the exact time when your message was opened.

Read times have their own granular privacy settings, based on the privacy settings of your Last Seen status. If you hide your Last Seen time from certain users, you can also choose to hide your read status from them.

To protect privacy, read times in private chats are only visible for 7 days before being deleted – just like in groups.

Premium One-Way Last Seen and Read Times

By default, hiding your last seen or read time from a user also hides theirs from you. But with Telegram Premium, you can hide your last seen and read time and still see those of others who share theirs with you.

If you hide your last seen or read time, it is always hidden from all users – including Premium users.

Premium Private Message Permissions

With this update, Premium users are able to select who can send them messages – either 'Everyone' or 'My Contacts and Premium Users'. When enabled, users who aren't contacts or don't have Premium can't start chats with you – but can reply if you message them first.

If you receive an unwanted message from another user, there is a button at the top of the chat to block the user and alert our moderators.

Premium Faster Loading Time and High Quality Stories

Video stories will now load 4x faster. We've also added a new setting for Premium users to view video stories in higher quality – if they don't mind the extra traffic.

All users can now control playback speed in video stories.

New design for shared contacts

Messages with shared contacts now look better and reflect the color and emoji icons that these users selected in their Appearance Settings.

Improved Video Messages on iOS

In addition to one-time mode and pausing & resuming, we've improved video message recording on iOS. Now, you can enjoy clearer video quality, switch between front and back cameras more quickly, and experience less camera shake.

App Icons on macOS

With the direct version of Telegram for macOS, you can now choose from 15 icons to make your app match your theme or stand out in the dock.

To change your app icon, go to Settings > Appearance > App Icon.

Colorful Calls, Thanos Snap Effect, and an Epic Update for Bots

Colorful Calls, Thanos Snap Effect, and an Epic Update for Bots

Colorful Calls, Thanos Snap Effect, and an Epic Update for Bots

Telegram's 10th update of 2023 adds improved calls with a colorful new design that use less of your phone's battery, a new vaporize effect when you delete messages, the largest bot update in Telegram's history – and more.

Upgraded Calls

Telegram calls let users talk, turn on their camera or share their screen — they are protected by end-to-end encryption and available on every platform.

In this update, we have totally redesigned calls, adding new animations and beautiful backgrounds that change dynamically based on the call's status: ringing, active or ended. The new interface requires fewer resources than before, which means it saves battery life and works better on older devices.

We've also fixed hundreds of bugs and interface glitches – and added some improvements to call quality. More improvements to connection and audio quality are coming in 2024.

Thanos Snap Effect when Deleting Messages

Last month we added an experimental vaporize animation on iOS for auto-deleted messages.

This impressive (and energy-efficient) animation is now available on both iOS and Android and plays whenever you delete any message.

Epic Bot Update: Reactions and Much More

Telegram's free bot platform lets developers integrate any kind of service into the Telegram ecosystem – from simple chat bots to powerful mini apps that can replace any website.

We're closing this year with the largest update to the Bot Platform in Telegram's history. Among dozens of new features, bots can now react to messages and manage reactions, quotes, and links, send replies to other chats or topics, and much more.

With the new update, bots can also get information about giveaways and boosts in channels where they are admins.

Developers can find all the changes to the Bot Platform in this epic changelog.

If you're interested in building bots and mini apps, check out our Bot Guide, where you can find extra info and even a step-by-step tutorial for beginners.

This update includes more new features, but we will tell you about them in January. In the meantime, call your friends to congratulate them – or make a bot to do it for you. See you very soon, next year!

Channel Appearance, Posts in Stories and More

Channel Appearance, Posts in Stories and More

Channel Appearance, Posts in Stories and More

In Telegram's Christmas update, channels can set wallpapers, emoji statuses and profile logos, users can repost channel messages to stories, Telegram Premium can be given to multiple people at once, giveways can include additional prizes, and more.

Customize Channel Appearance

Channels are now able to customize their appearance as they gain levels thanks to boosts from subscribers or giveaways.

In addition to the color of their messages, channel owners can now choose a color and logo for their profile cover, set an emoji status and a wallpaper that will be visible to all who open the channel.

For their emoji status, channels can choose from the thousands of emoji made by Telegram artists, adding anything from an animated snowman to a cryptic hotdog next to the channel name.

To customize your channel, open its profile and select Channel Settings > Appearance.

The channel's level determines which appearance settings are available. Levels also enable channels to post stories and add custom reactions.

Share Posts in Stories

Messages from channels can now be reposted to stories. This adds a copy of the message, which you can move, resize and decorate. Anyone who views your story can simply tap to open the message in its channel.

Reposts support all message types – like photos, files and even voice or video messages. In the coming updates, reposts to stories will get additional features, like interactive polls.

To repost a message, tap the Share Arrow next to the message and select 'Repost to Story'.

Massive Premium Gifts

To congratulate your friends, you can now gift Telegram Premium to multiple people at once – and take care of this year's Christmas gifts in record time.

In Settings there is a new 'Gift Premium' section, where you can select up to 10 users and give them Telegram Premium in one tap. If one of those users already has Premium, they can save the gift to activate later or send it to a friend.

Premium can also be gifted to individual users from their Profile > ⋮ / ⋯ > Gift Premium.

Custom Prizes and Winner Lists in Giveaways

Channels hosting giveaways can now set a longer duration and specify additional prizes – to raffle off everything from burritos to Bugattis.

For even more transparency, giveaway hosts can toggle 'Show Winners' to announce the accounts that won. If this is enabled, the lucky winners are announced in a new confetti-filled message.

Telegram randomly selects the winners and automatically distributes Telegram Premium gift codes. Channel admins are responsible for delivering any additional prizes they wish to include.

View Reposts and More

Users can already see who viewed their story and how they reacted – and channels get detailed statistics to track how their stories perform.

With this update, channel admins can now view reactions to their stories and both users and channels can see who reposted their stories.

Photo Cutouts for Stories

Photos from your gallery can be placed on top of stories – and now you can remove the background from images of your pets, friends and legendary artifacts.

To add a photo to a story, open the sticker panel in stories and tap the photo icon. Then select the photo, tap > in the menu and 'Cut Out' to erase its background. This feature requires iOS 17+ or Android 7+ with Google Play Services installed.

That's all for today's update – we'll try to fit more new features into the chimney before this year is out.

Happy Winter Holidays!

Similar Channels, Reposting Stories, and 9 More Features

2023-11-30 22:28:19

Similar Channels, Reposting Stories, and 9 More Features

Similar Channels, Reposting Stories, and 9 More Features

Today's update lets you find similar channels to those you follow, repost stories from friends and channels, and add video messages to stories. We've also added profile colors, wallpapers for both sides, story stats and custom reactions for channels, voice transcription for everyone and much more.

Similar Channels

Hundreds of millions follow Telegram channels to keep up with latest news, entertainment content and AI-generated pictures of six-fingered cats.

To make discovering channels easier, when you join a channel, you'll now see a list of similar public channels.

Only public channels appear in the list, they are selected automatically based on similarities in their subscriber bases.

You can also access Similar Channels from a channel's profile.

Reposting Stories

You can repost stories from your friends and favorite channels to your page, increasing their audience in just two taps.

Reposting a story lets you add extra content like text, audio or even a video comment – along with a separate visibility setting for your repost.

To repost a story, tap the share arrow and select 'Repost Story' – to protect privacy, only stories that are visible to 'Everyone' can be reposted.

Video Messages on Stories

When posting a story, you can now add a video message to supply commentary or simply make a face. Video messages can be resized and moved around the screen, as well as along the time axis to start or end at any frame. The creative possibilities are endless — from giving backstory to a photo to creating a video conversation with yourself as different characters.

Video Messages on Stories

Stories you repost also support video messages – so you can share your thoughts on a trending topic or join a conga line of creators reposting each other.

To record a video message, hold the camera icon in the story editor. Hold on the video track at the bottom of the screen to control volume.

Premium: Profile Colors

Our previous update let Premium users choose a color for their name, links they send and replies to their messages.

Starting today, Telegram Premium also lets you set a unique color combination with logos (like these or these) for your profile to make the page stand out.

To customize your messages or profile, go to Settings > Chat Settings > Change Your Color on Android. On iOS, it's under Settings > Appearance > Your Color.

Premium: Wallpapers for Both Sides

Anyone can set custom wallpapers for individual chats – making each conversation easy to recognize with different themes and your favorite photos.

Now, Premium users can set a wallpaper for both sides, applying the same appearance for both themselves and their chat partner.

To set a custom wallpaper in any 1-on-1 chat, tap ⋮ (on iOS, open the user's profile, then select ⋯) > Change Wallpaper.

Voice-to-Text for Everyone

Since 2022, Premium users have been able to transcribe voice and video messages – helping them quickly see what was said or even translate audio in different languages.

With this update, all users can convert up to 2 messages per week into text – simply tap the →A icon to try it out.

Note: This feature will be rolling out gradually and may not be available everywhere immediately.

Telegram Premium still allows for unlimited voice-to-text conversion.

Story Stats for Channels

Channels that are able to post stories can now see statistics for story views, shares and reactions – with detailed graphs to track their reach and performance.

Story Stats for Channels

Story stats can be seen by tapping ⋮/⋯ when viewing your story, or in Channel Info > ⋮/⋯ > Statistics.

Channel stats, boosts and giveaway settings are easier to reach via Channel Info > Edit > Statistics and Boosts.

Custom Reactions for Channels

Channel admins have a new interface for managing reactions – where they can add or remove specific emoji.

In addition to standard reactions, channels can also add custom emoji – getting 1 custom reaction for each level they have.

Custom Reactions for Channels

Channel stats now show a reaction sentiment graph, based on the emoji used to react to its posts. It tracks positive and negative for emotional equivalents of 👍 / 🔥 and 👎 / 💩, and 'other' for the more ambigious options like 🦆, 🧞‍♂️ or 🪃.

Code Highlighting in Messages

Thanks to the winner of a recent coding contest, all Telegram apps are now able to detect the coding language and highlight the syntax in messages sent with ```code formatting``` – so you can finally see the difference between Java and C#. 😉

Code Highlighting

Improvements for Topics

In groups with Topics enabled, your app will save your view preference of View as Messages or View as Topics when you open the group again.

Improvements for Topics

Thanos Snap Effects on iOS

Auto-deleted messages on iOS have an awesome animation when their timer runs out – watch as they get vaporized into a million pixels before disappearing forever.

You can enable an auto-delete timer for messages in individual chats, or across your entire account. The quickest way to see the new animation in action is by setting up a short self-destruct timer in a Secret Chat.

That's all for today. We'll continue working on similar updates full of features to explore.

Channel owners can now launch Giveaways to randomly distribute prizes among their followers. This is great if you want to promote your channel, get new subscribers or reward existing ones.

Giveaways have been a popular trend on social media for a while, but until now it was impossible to quickly organize them in a verifiable and transparent manner. Today Telegram changes that. This will allow millions of users to receive prizes like Telegram Premium subscriptions, and Telegram will guarantee that winners are selected fairly.

Free Telegram Premium

Channel owners can create a Giveaway in just a few taps. Telegram will randomly select the winners based on the rules they set – and distribute the prizes.

The lucky winners will receive links with gift codes, which can serve as public verification that they won. Each code includes a free subscription to Telegram Premium, but the organizers may add other prizes (like Teslas) on top to spice things up.

To try this out, Join the Giveaway sponsored by the Chief Totem Animal of Telegram before November 13th. If you already have Premium, you can still enter and win – and pass the prize to a friend.

Getting Boosts

In addition to getting new followers, channels automatically earn 4 boosts for every subscription that they give out in giveaways. These boosts can't be reassigned and stay with the channel for the duration of the subscriptions in the giveaway. Boosts help channels level up and unlock stories, custom colors and more.

Creating Giveaways

Beyond the number of winners and giveaway duration, the organizer can specify whether all subscribers or only new subscribers are eligible – and select certain countries or require that participants subscribe to other channels to be included.

Channels of any level can start a giveaway via Channel Info > ⋮ or ⋯ > Statistics > Boosts > Get Boosts via Gifts.

Paying for Giveaways

To start a giveaway, the organizer must pay in advance for the Premium subscriptions they wish to award. This can be done from any Telegram app, but is more affordable via @PremiumBot or Fragment.

The App Store and Google Play limit the size of transactions – while @PremiumBot allows for larger purchases. For massive giveaways, Fragment lets you distribute thousands of subscriptions at a time.

Paying for a giveaway on Fragment

You can access @PremiumBot from Telegram Web, Telegram Desktop or the direct version of Telegram for Android.

More Boosts for Users

Starting today, each Telegram Premium account receives more boosts as part of its subscription. Instead of one boost, users who pay for their own subscription have 4 boosts to spread among several channels – or to give certain channels multiple boosts.

Choosing a channel to boost

If you gift Premium to someone, they'll get 1 boost and you'll get 3 more for your own account. If you win Premium in a giveaway, your 4 boosts automatically go to the host channel instead.

That's all for today, we'll be back soon to give away more new features to boost your mood this fall.

Replies 2.0, Adjustable Link Previews, Name Colors and More

Replies 2.0, Adjustable Link Previews, Name Colors and More

Replies 2.0, Adjustable Link Previews, Name Colors and More

Today's update lets you quote specific parts of messages when replying, send your replies to other chats, add quote formatting to any text, configure link previews, choose a color for your account, and much more.

Reply Revolution

Telegram pioneered replies back in 2015, for the first time giving people an intuitive way of following complex conversations in chats. Other messaging apps have adopted Telegram's standard – and today we're pushing the boundaries further.

Now users can quote specific parts of any message, making their responses 100% precise. Tapping the quote focuses on the exact location in the original message with a beautiful animation.

To quote a message, tap (on iOS, hold) the message, then hold and drag to select text and choose 'Quote'.

Starting today, replies can also be sent to other chats – in case you want to reply privately or move the discussion to a different group or channel. Tapping the reply from another chat opens the message in its original chat if you are allowed to access it.

To reply in a different chat, tap the reply bar above the input field, select 'Reply in Another Chat', then choose where you'd like to send it.

Quote Formatting

Beyond quoting others directly, you can add quote formatting to any text, including multiple quotes in one reply.

Quote Formatting

We've also improved the context menu to make formatting options easier to access.

Adjustable Link Previews

In 2015, Telegram was also the first messaging app to add detailed link previews, showing a title, description and media for the page.

This update gives you unprecedented control over link previews in your messages. You can change the size of media, choose whether the preview appears above or below your message and select which link to preview if there are several.

Opening links has become easier since you can now tap anywhere in the preview area.

Reply, Forwarding and Link Settings

Whenever you're replying when forwarding messages, including links in a reply, or doing all three together, you can now access all settings using the new tabs in the menu.

Premium Account Colors

With Telegram Premium, you can customize your account further than ever by choosing a color or color combination for your account.

This changes the color of your name in all groups, any links you send, as well as replies to your messages.

Additionally, you can choose an icon that will be used as a pattern, creating a unique background behind your messages when others quote or reply to you.

To set an account color on Android, go to Settings > Chat Settings > Change Name Color. On iOS, go to Settings > Appearance > Your Name Color.

These settings are also available for channels that have been boosted to Level 5 or higher.

Story Improvements

Stories now let you fast-forward and rewind videos – simply hold down on the screen and then slide right or left.

For better, brighter selfies, you can use the front flash – with flexible settings for warmth and intensity.

To adjust the warmth and intensity of the flash, hold the ⚡ icon when using the front-facing camera for a story.

Opening stories for the first time shows a quick tutorial, covering their basic browsing gestures.

That's all for today. We'll be Linking Forward to your Replies while we're working on the next update.

Stories in Channels, View-Once Media and More

Stories in Channels, View-Once Media and More

Introducing Stories for Channels, Your Music in Stories and More

Last month we celebrated Telegram's 10th birthday, with Stories for cake. With this update, channels can start posting stories too, thanks to a new boost system. Stories now have reaction stickers and the option to add your own music. We've also added a View Once setting to self-destructing media, better login alerts, and several stories with cats wearing watermelons.

Stories for Channels

Telegram users can grant their favorite channels the ability to post stories by giving them boosts. Telegram Premium now includes 4 boosts that can be assigned to any channel.

Channels level up as they gain more boosts – and for each level, they can post 1 additional story per day to their subscribers' story feeds. Once more, Telegram users are in control: choosing which channel admins may spam them with food photos – and even the number of meals per day!

Boosts stay on the channel unless users decide to move them elsewhere, so those stories better be entertaining.

Channels can ask subscribers for boosts using a special link like t.me/durov?boost (a teaser-trailer won't hurt either). To get the boost link for your channel and see how many you need to level up, go to Channel Info > More > Statistics > Boosts. Getting to level 10 gives your channel +15 resistance to trolls and unlocks unique admin skins.

Channel admins can post stories

Once your channel unlocks stories, admins with the relevant rights who have a Telegram Premium subscription can post by tapping the Post Story Icon on the Channel Info page.

Admins will also see a 'Post Story As' option when posting stories from their chat list. (So remind them to check where they're sending those noodles, maybe.)

Reaction Stickers in Stories

Both users and channels can add reaction stickers to their stories – letting viewers respond with even more emoji in just one tap. Stories posted by channels display reaction counters, showing how many people chose each emotion. (Yes, jellyfish and moose are emotions 🙄)

To add a reaction sticker, tap the 💭 icon in the sticker panel, then choose an emoji from the dozens of options in the window. Premium subscribers can use any of their custom emoji as well. Except the sloth. Nobody may use that one, you have been warned!

Everyone can add 1 reaction sticker to each story, while Premium users are able to add up to 5.

Your Music in Stories

Audio files on your device can be used in photo and video stories – allowing you to create content with custom soundtracks, narration and proper rickrolls.

From the sticker panel, tap 'Audio' and select a file, then adjust the track to select any section. In video stories you can keep the original sound as well as move your added audio track to any point – like a BADUMMM-TSSSS! in the middle, or a bit of outro music.

View-Once Media

Speaking of noodles, Telegram added self-destructing media way back in 2013. Now it is even easier to use, has a new look, and a new View Once setting.

In any 1-on-1 chat, tapping the View Once Icon in the media editor lets you choose how long your photo or video will be visible after opening – from View Once to 30 seconds. View-Once media is permanently deleted from the chat when the recipient opens it.

Like for all self-destructing media, saving and taking screenshots will not work for view-once media. We'll also try to Neuralyze anyone with a photographic memory — unless they're wearing sunglasses.

New Login Alerts

Whenever someone logs in to your account, Telegram sends a notification to all your devices. To make this even more noticeable, new logins now display this alert at the top of your chat list. No. Pressure. At. All.

If you didn't log in on a new device, tap 'No, it's not me!' to instantly secure your account. Just make sure you don't jump to conclusions if it's Sunday morning.

You can review all devices that currently have access to your messages in Settings > Devices.

For an extra layer of protection, you can add a Two-Step Verification password in Settings > Privacy and Security > Two-Step Verification.

Never enter login codes or your password anywhere except when you are logging in to Telegram to access your chats!

And More

The developers also added dozens of bug fixes and optimizations. iOS users will notice that sending videos has improved – it is now faster and the progress bar is more accurate. Android users will notice increased performance when viewing spoiler animations, including view-once and hidden media. Blackberry and Windows Phone users will notice they have been extinct for the past decade.

And that's all for today, we'll be working on the next update while you're watching channel stories. Bon Appetit!

Stories and 10 Years of Telegram

Stories and 10 Years of Telegram

Stories and 10 Years of Telegram

Today, Telegram celebrates its 10th birthday – with our biggest update yet. Over the past decade we’ve built hundreds of new features that are now used by over 800 million people. In this update, we launch Stories – with a unique dual camera mode, granular privacy settings, flexible duration options and much more.

🚀 Channels and groups can also post stories, thanks to a new boost system.

Telegram Stories

Stories let you quickly share moments and see more from your friends – and they're now available on Telegram.

This was by far the most-requested feature in the history of Telegram – and we've spent several months innovating and refining the format. Telegram Stories have all the things you'd expect – and plenty more that have never been done before.

Stories are displayed in an expandable section at the top of your screen – so you still see the full length of your chat list and folders.

When viewing a story, you can quickly tap to share, reply privately, or react – tap for a quick ♥️ or hold down to use hundreds more reactions.

By default, you'll see stories from all your contacts on your home page – and you can hide stories from specific contacts, sending them to your archived chats.

Dual Camera Mode

To capture scenes from every angle, stories can take photos or videos with both the front and rear camera of your device simultaneously – letting you choose which camera goes where, even while recording.

Stickers, Locations and Captions

Stories use Telegram's powerful media editor – allowing you to add text, drawings, stickers or tag your location. For even more context, stories support captions – where you can include a longer text description, tag friends or add links.

You can add multiple images from your gallery – or use search to find GIFs and pictures from the web.

Granular Privacy Settings

When posting a story, you can select from 4 privacy settings: Everyone, My Contacts, Close Friends and Selected Contacts. Each option can be completely customized, allowing you to include or exclude any users.

You can also select a list of users who will never see your story – so your boss or grandma won't find out about your adventurous side. 😉

Granular Privacy Settings

To keep a story even more private, you can disable screenshots to prevent viewers from saving or sharing it.

Stories in Profiles

Stories can last for your choice of 6, 12, 24 or 48 hours. You can also post them to your profile, arranged in a gorgeous grid — where both old contacts and new connections can see your highlight reel for as long as you want.

Now when you meet people on Telegram, you'll see exciting snapshots of their life – not just a few profile photos.

Each story that you post to your profile has separate privacy settings – so you can always control which ones certain people are able to see.

Editing Stories

For the first time in the history of social media, you can update any element of your story at any time – changing its visibility, caption, on-screen text, stickers or anything else – without having to delete and repost it from scratch.

To edit your story, open it on the device you posted it from and tap ⋮ or ⋯ > Edit Story.

Detailed View Statistics

When a user opens a story, they appear in a list of viewers that is visible to the story's author – like a read receipt.

After you post a story, you can open it to see the list – which you can filter to show just your contacts, and sort by recent views first or reactions first. If you want to check if a specific user saw it, type their name into the search bar.

Detailed View Statistics

For more anonymity, Premium users can enable Stealth Mode – erasing their views from any stories they opened in the past 5 minutes, and hiding what they view for the next 25 minutes.

…and More

To see all the story features that couldn't fit in this blog post, check out this detailed guide to Telegram Stories.

Thank you all for 10 great years. If you feel like celebrating some more, check out our CEO’s thoughts on the occasion 🎂

Meanwhile, we're already working on the next update, cake in hand.

Shareable Chat Folders, Custom Wallpapers and More

Shareable Chat Folders, Custom Wallpapers and More

Introducing Shareable Chat Folders, Custom Wallpapers and More

This update lets users share entire chat folders with one link, create custom wallpapers for individual chats, use web apps in any chat and more.

Shareable Chat Folders

Chat folders can now be shared with a link – inviting your friends or colleagues to dozens of work groups, collections of news channels, and more. With one tap, they will add the folder and instantly join all its chats.

Each chat folder supports multiple invite links allowing access to different chats. When creating a link, select the chats you'd like to include – and give it a unique name to match, like Interns or Managers.

You can include any public chats, as well as any chats where you have the admin rights to add people.

If you add more chats to your folder and update its link, members will see a suggestion to join the new chats.

To create a folder, open Settings > Chat Folders. For more details, see our in-depth guide on Shareable Folders.

Custom Wallpapers

Your favorite photos and color combinations can become custom wallpapers in specific chats to give conversations extra personality and make them stand out.

After setting a wallpaper, a special message will be sent in the chat that allows your chat partner to add the same wallpaper on their side – or they can create their own.

You can set a custom wallpaper in any 1-on-1 chat. To set a custom wallpaper, tap ⋮ > 'Set Wallpaper' in the chat header on Android, or open a profile and tap ⋯ > 'Change Wallpaper' on iOS.

Better Bots

Telegram bots are able to host seamless web apps, bringing services and utilities to millions of users – these web apps can now be launched in any chat.

Web apps of bots that support this feature can be accessed via a direct link or by mentioning the bot's username in any chat on Telegram. For example, try typing @durgerkingbot (followed by a space) in any chat — or posting this link: https://t.me/DurgerKingBot/menu

When launched in a group, web apps can now support collaboration and multiplayer features for members.

This further expands the already vast opportunities for third-party developers and merchants on Telegram — free of charge for everyone. Check out the API and start building!

Subscribe to @BotNews for the latest updates about Telegram bots.

Bot Links and Telegram Premium on Fragment

Bots are now able to use collectible usernames — including links without the -bot suffix.

You can also buy Telegram Premium for yourself or gift it to others via Fragment.

Fast Scrolling for Attachments

The attachment menu now scrolls at super-fast speeds, just like Shared Media. Pull down on the date bar to time travel.

Read Time in Topics

In groups of under 100 members with topics enabled, read receipts now show what time your messages were read by other group members.

Improved Interfaces

Send When Online requires fewer taps – in chats where you can see your partner's last seen time, hold the Send button.

You can create groups without adding members immediately – in case you want to set up permissions and pin a few messages first.

On the latest iPhones, profile pictures have a new animation – smoothly sliding into the dynamic island when you scroll on profiles and info pages.

And that's all for today – see you soon with even more features.

Power Saving Mode and More

2023-03-08 18:54:21

Power Saving Mode and More

Power Saving Mode and More

This update brings a new power saving mode, optimizes Telegram for lower-end Android devices, adds even more playback speed options, and much more.

Power Saving Mode

Telegram's beautiful animations and lightweight effects are optimized to make any phone feel powerful, but can now be disabled to extend battery life and improve performance on older devices.

Power Saving Mode can be set to automatically turn on when your battery reaches a certain percent – with individual toggles that let you disable specific effects.

iOS users can also use power saving settings to limit background updates – although we do not recommend doing this, because you will see your app 'Updating…' a lot more often.

For Android, we've manually tested more than 200 device types to see how well Telegram performs and created optimized default settings to ensure all users get the best experience.

You can toggle Power Saving mode or tweak individual settings for autoplay, animations, and effects in Settings > Power Saving.

Granular Playback Speed

For years, Telegram users have been able to change the playback speed for videos, podcasts, voice and video messages. Now you can have even more flexibility by holding the 2x button to choose any speed between 0.2x–2.5x.

To change the playback speed of videos, tap Menu Android or Menu iOS, then tap 'Playback Speed' and move the slider.

Read Time in Small Groups

To make collaboration in small teams easier, read receipts in groups under 100 members now show the time when your messages were read by each person.

Auto-Send Invite Links

Telegram users can control who is allowed to add them to groups. If you're inviting someone who restricts this, you can now quickly send them an invite link as a message.

Invite links now show previews in chats so that you can see where they lead at a glance.

To control who can add you to groups directly, go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Groups & Channels.

Dynamic Order for Sticker Packs

As of the previous update, recently used sticker packs move to the top of your panel for easy access. If you want your packs to stay where they are, you can tap the gear icon in the sticker panel and switch off Dynamic Pack Order.

Translated Bot Descriptions

Bot developers can now fully localize their bots by translating bot descriptions and the 'What can this bot do?' sections into multiple languages.

Improved folder support on iOS

iOS users can mark all chats in a folder as read with one tap. When forwarding messages, folders can be used to quickly find the right chat. These improvements are also coming to our Android app in one of the next updates.

New Animated Emoji

In case you were wondering if this update includes ten new packs of custom emoji for Telegram premium users – yes, it does.

New Interactive Emoji and Reactions

Our animators added new interactive versions of 👾😡😎 🤷‍♀️🤷🤷‍♂️. Send any of them in 1-on-1 chats, then tap to unleash a full-screen effect for you and your partner. Everyone can also use these emoji as reactions.

The Great Bug Hunt

Entomologists may disagree, but we are no fans of bugs. So in this update cycle, Telegram developers took a two-week break from implementing new features and eliminated over 400 known imperfections across Telegram apps.

While we're working on the next update, everyone is welcome to use bugs.telegram.org to report issues to our team and leave suggestions via suggestions.telegram.org.

Profile Photo Maker, Translating Entire Chats, Emoji Categories and More

Profile Photo Maker, Translating Entire Chats, Emoji Categories and More

Profile Photo Maker, Emoji Categories, Translating Entire Chats, and More

Telegram's first update of the year adds 10 major features by way of a warm-up exercise.

Profile Picture Maker

You can quickly turn any sticker or animated emoji into a profile picture for your accounts, groups or channels. Everyone can use animated and custom emoji for these pictures, even if they don't have Telegram Premium.

You can set or suggest profile pictures for your contacts – try editing a contact's info on Telegram.

Premium Translating Entire Chats

Premium users can now translate entire chats, groups and channels in real time by tapping the Translate bar at the top. The options menu lets you hide the bar and control which languages are translated.

All users can translate individual messages by selecting them and tapping 'Translate'.

Emoji Categories

Stickers and emoji are now sorted by categories like 👍 ❤️ or 💤 in the panel and when choosing reactions or statuses. Hold any emoji to zoom in and get a better look before sending.

Telegram users can send more than a million different stickers and emoji, but choosing the right one doesn't have to be a full-time job.

Network Usage

You can see how much data has been used by Telegram with detailed pie charts for Wi-Fi and mobile data – and adjust your auto-download settings to suit your data plan.

Storage Usage received a similar upgrade last month. At this rate, we will soon run out of things that could be presented as neat pie charts and still aren't.

Auto-Save Incoming Media

You can control when media is saved automatically to your gallery based on its size, type and which chat it was received from. This menu now also supports exceptions, so you can only save exactly what you want.

With Telegram, there's no need to store everything on your device. Media and documents can be removed from your phone's storage and re-downloaded from your Telegram cloud at any time.

Granular Media Permissions

Admins can choose whether group members are allowed to send 9 distinct media types – like photos, voice or video messages. They can also disable text messages to create media-only groups.

At long last, voice notes only or quiz-only communication is possible without constant admin vigilance.

Annual Premium Subscription

You can save up to 40% on your Premium Telegram Premium subscription by pre-paying for a year of exclusive features.

Annual Premium Subscription

Now that you have a full year of premium ahead, why not gift a few months to friends as well?

Chat Selection for Bots

Bot developers can add special buttons which help users select groups, channels or people that meet predefined criteria.

For example, this can be used to quickly add the bot to a group where the user is an admin and topics are enabled.

Bot developers can find more detailed info in the manual and on @BotNews.

Re-Login with Apple and Google ID

Logged out users can quickly log back in using their Apple or Google ID without entering an SMS code. If you have a 2-Step Verification password set, you'll still need to enter it.

New Custom Emoji

No update is complete without 10 new packs of custom emoji from Telegram artists. This time we've included several hundred icons specially designed for group and profile pictures.

You can browse and add any of these packs right from the new trending section at the top of your emoji panel.

New Interactive Emoji

Our animators added new interactive versions of 🦄 🙊 💊 😘 💘 🙉. Send any of them in 1-on-1 chats, then tap to unleash a full-screen effect for you and your partner. Everyone can also use these emoji as reactions.

Did we hear 'get some rest'? Too late, we're already busy working on the next update.

Hidden Media, Zero Storage Usage, New Drawing Tools, Profile Pictures for Your Contacts, and More

2022-12-30 20:17:33

Hidden Media, Zero Storage Usage, New Drawing Tools, Profile Pictures for Your Contacts, and More

Introducing Hidden Media, Zero Storage Usage, New Drawing Tools, Profile Pictures for Your Contacts and More

Nobody will miss 2022, but this update offers some pleasant reasons to remember it: media with spoiler effects, new ways to save space on your device, new drawing tools, suggested profile pictures, and more.

Hidden Media

Telegram supports spoiler formatting to hide any text in messages. Now you can also cover photos and videos with a shimmering layer that blurs the image. It will take your recipients one tap to break the spell and see the content.

In the attachment menu, select one or more items, tap Menu Android or Menu iOS and choose 'Hide with Spoiler'.

Zero Storage Usage

Telegram can take up next to no space on your device. You can remove media and documents from your phone's storage and re-download them from your Telegram cloud at any time. For years, users could set a maximum cache size or auto-remove unused items after a period of time.

With this update, you can add separate auto-remove settings for cached media from Private Chats, Groups, and Channels – with exceptions for specific chats.

The new pie charts help visualize what's taking up space, and dedicated tabs for Media, Files and Music let you clear the largest items in just a few taps.

On iOS, we've greatly reduced the time it takes the app to calculate your cache size. Android users are in luck – their app was already doing this at top speed.

Check out the new options in Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage.

New Drawing and Text Tools

Telegram's already powerful media editor has been fully redesigned. Drawing tools dynamically change width based on drawing speed and automatically smooth your lines.

There is a new blur tool to redact sensitive data (or photobombers) – and 5 high-precision ways to choose colors, including the Eyedropper tool.

When adding text to photos or videos, you can now change its size, font, and background. Adding custom animated emoji to text on images is available for all users, even if they don't have a Telegram Premium subscription.

To quickly add shapes like rectangles, circles, arrows, stars, and chat bubbles, tap the “+” button. You can also hold the surface to fill the canvas with color – or to erase everything.

In the coming updates, we plan to further refine the media editor interfaces and improve their performance.

Profile Pictures for Your Contacts

When editing your contacts, you can choose a picture for them – only you will see it on their profile.

If you have a good profile picture for your contact, you can suggest it to them. It will take them just two taps to add it to their profile.

Open a contact's Profile > Edit, then choose 'Set Photo for…' or 'Suggest Photo for…'.

Public Profile Pictures

If you only allow certain users to see your profile photos, you can set a public picture for everyone else.

This update also lets you achieve ultimate profile picture privacy: you can set visibility to 'Nobody' and add some users or groups as exceptions.

These settings are available in Settings > Privacy and Security > Profile Photo.

Hiding Group Members

Tools like the aggressive anti-spam setting help chat admins keep large groups clean – but some groups may also want to protect their members from unwanted personal messages.

Admins of groups with 100+ members can now choose to hide the member list. This way, if people don't send messages to the group, only its admins will know they were there.

Hiding Group Members

New Progress Animations on Android

Smooth new animations have been added when jumping to a faraway reply in a busy chat and to other pages throughout the app.

Premium New Animated Emoji

Premium users get 10 new packs of custom animated emoji as a present from Telegram artists.

Find these packs and more in the Emoji emoji tab of your Stickers sticker panel.

More Interactive Emoji

We keep expanding our universe of interactive emoji. To watch full-screen effects in sync with your chat partner, send a single 🎅🎄☃️💅🗿🆒🤪 in any 1-on-1 chat and then tap on it.

All these emoji can now be used as reactions – the Moai face will be particularly useful to see off 2022.

Topics for Groups of Any Size

Topics are now available in all groups, regardless of size – giving everyone a new way to organize discussion.

And that's it for today. We considered squeezing in one more update this December but ultimately decided to take the rest of the month off.

No-SIM Signup, Auto-Delete All Chats, Topics 2.0 and More

No-SIM Signup, Auto-Delete All Chats, Topics 2.0 and More

No-SIM Signup, Global Auto-Delete Timer, Topics 2.0 and More

With this update, you can have a Telegram account without a SIM card and set up a global timer to automatically delete messages in all new chats. Topics in groups are now even more powerful – and available for groups with 100+ members.

Sign up without a SIM card

On Telegram, your phone number was never visible to strangers – our users control who can see their number and whether others are allowed to find them by their phone number.

Today starts a new era of privacy. You can have a Telegram account without a SIM card and log in using blockchain-powered anonymous numbers available on the Fragment platform.

Auto-Delete All Chats

Telegram introduced self-destructing messages all the way back in 2013. Users can delete any messages they send or receive for both sides without leaving a trace. They can also set up auto-delete timers to clean up individual chats after a period of time.

Today we're expanding your control over your digital footprint into the future. You can now set a global auto-delete timer to automatically remove messages in all new chats.

Existing chats will not be affected, but you can easily expand your auto-delete settings to any of them from the new menu in Settings > Privacy & Security > Auto-Delete Messages.

The timer will be automatically applied to all your new chats with users – regardless of who starts them – and to all new groups you create.

We've also made it easier to set up auto-delete in small private groups – the timer can now be enabled by any members who are allowed to change the group's name and picture.

Ultimate Privacy

Telegram's unique combination of removing messages for all participants without a trace, and controlling existing and future chats with auto-delete timers gives you full ownership of your entire message history. Together with using your account without a SIM card it delivers ultimate privacy.

Topics 2.0

Our previous update gave admins of large groups the option to organize discussions into topics, merging classic internet forums with the latest in messaging technology. Today, topics become even more powerful – and are now available for groups from 100 members or more.

Groups with topics open in a sleek two-column mode, so you can access your other chats as quickly as before. To switch to the latest topic straight from your chat list, simply tap the new button in the preview.

Groups now have a default topic called General, which holds the group's service messages and pre-topic message history. This topic is available for all group members so they can find older messages, but admins can rename the topic or hide it from the main list.

To quickly view all the latest messages at once, you can switch to 'View as Messages' mode. Every message in that mode now has a button showing where it was posted – and you can tap it to go straight to that topic.

To help you navigate the list of topics, badge counters for topics you have already visited will use a bolder accent color, while ones you've never opened will use a lighter color.

For fans of structure and order, groups can now have up to 5 pinned topics – and each topic supports unlimited pinned messages.

Group owners can enable topics in their Group Settings, and can control who is allowed to create and manage topics in Permissions. Everyone is welcome to try topics in this public group.

Aggressive Anti-Spam

Being one of the top-5 most downloaded apps in the world also makes Telegram one of the top-5 most desired targets for spammers. Huge Telegram chats sometimes rely on third-party anti-spam bots to help admins keep them clean. Such opt-in bots can be efficient because they are not constrained by Telegram's commitment to user privacy and can afford to be more proactive than our built-in anti-spam systems.

Now admins of groups with over 200 members can choose to unleash the full proactive power of Telegram's own algorithms – turning on the new Aggressive mode for the automated spam filters.

Group admins can report any false positives right from their Recent Actions tab – this will help us train our droids to guard your groups even better in the future.

Temporary QR codes

Telegram users that have a public username can generate QR codes to quickly connect with people around them.

Now you can generate a temporary QR code if you don't have a username and are hiding your phone number from everyone. Scanning the code will let people instantly add you as a contact without knowing your phone number.

Emoji search on iOS

Telegram iOS users can enjoy Emoji search – that was already available on Android – using keywords in multiple languages to find the perfect emoji, including those from your custom packs.

To open the emoji panel, simply tap Emoji in your input field while typing a message.

If an emoji keyword is missing, you’re welcome to suggest it on our Translation Platform – just don't forget to choose your language from the list on the left.

You can also type keywords like 'happy' or 'smile' at the start of a message to see emoji suggestions based on it, or type a colon and a keyword anywhere in the message like :party or :mask. This isn't new, it's just neat.

Detailed Storage Usage and More on Android

The Storage Usage page has been redesigned on Android in a way that our iOS users will find familiar. It now shows how much space each chat is using on your device.

The media of individual chats can now be cleared from your cache, filtered by file type – like photos, videos, music and files.

Additionally, Android developers added support for opening Live Locations in third-party map apps and improved the design of loading elements like messages in chats, profile pictures and live locations.

Premium New Custom Emoji

Telegram artists have put together 10 more custom emoji packs – giving Premium users even more ways to express themselves in messages, reactions and statuses.

More Interactive Emoji

Another Telegram update means new interactive emoji – send a single 😇 🫡 🤝 🙈 🤗 ✍️ 😨 in any 1-on-1 chat and tap to play full-screen effects synchronized for you and your chat partner. All users can also use these emoji as reactions.

Many more are available as animated emoji, including flags 🇮🇳🇧🇷🇮🇩, everyday objects like 📨📱🛒 and some that are more abstract 🔝🔞🦄.

And this is it for today. Enjoy ultimate privacy while we're working on the (maybe) final update of this year.

Introducing Topics in Groups, Collectible Usernames, Voice-to-Text for Video Messages and More

Today's update adds topics to organize discussions in large groups, a new form of collectible usernames secured on a blockchain, an option to convert video messages to text, and much more.

Topics in Groups

Telegram groups can support huge communities with hundreds of thousands of users. To keep these chats easy to read any groups, regardless of their size, can now enable topics and create separate spaces for any subject.

Topics function as individual chats within the group – supporting their own shared media and notification settings. Members are free to chat in any topic from Anime to Zoology, using all their favorite features like polls, pinned messages and bots.

This feature is intended specifically for large groups, adding new ways to customize their chats and promote discussion. Later this year, we expect to introduce a different set of tools, tailored to small groups. If you want to give topics a test drive, try them out in this public group.

Group admins can enable topics in their Group Settings, and can control who is allowed to create and manage topics in Permissions.

As with anything on Telegram, further updates will bring more powerful tools for both admins and users of this feature.

Collectible Usernames

Telegram users can make it easy for others to contact them or find their public groups and channels via usernames. You can now assign collectible usernames to each of your accounts and public chats.

The ownership of collectible usernames is secured by TON, a fast and scalable blockchain network. They can be bought and sold through a new platform, giving a simple and secure way to acquire and exchange valuable Telegram domains.

Collectible usernames work just like basic @usernames, they appear in Global Search results and have their own links that can be used outside of Telegram: username.t.me and t.me/username.

Premium Voice-to-Text for Video Messages

Since the launch of Telegram Premium, subscribers have been able to convert any voice message to text – for times when it's more convenient to read than listen along. This update adds the same functionality to video messages, allowing Premium users to get an instant text transcript.

New Emoji Packs

While thousands of users experiment with uploading custom emoji sets, Telegram artists have completed 12 new emoji packs. Premium users can use these emoji in any messages and captions – or set them as statuses for Halloween:

Redesigned Night Mode for iOS

Dark themes have been updated for users on iOS, making colors more balanced with better blurring effects as you scroll in chats and the chat list.

Resizing Text on Android

Changing your text size in Chat Settings on Android now increases the size of all chat text – including link previews, reply headers and more.

Minor Design Improvements

A new animation has been added when you swipe left to reply. Tapping a user's phone number in their profile page will open a new menu with several call options. And for those brief moments when Telegram is loading messages in a group or channel, you'll see new pulsing placeholders.

New Interactive Emoji and Reactions

For those times when you’re studying, sleeping or being suspicious, this update brings 4 new interactive emoji 😴👨‍💻🤓👀 that play full-screen effects in 1-on-1 chats and can also be used as reactions. Additionally, all users can celebrate the spooky season with 3 more reactions 👻🎃😭 in any chat.

That’s all for today’s changes. We apologize that we weren’t able to celebrate Halloween on time this year, as Apple took two weeks to review the update.

Infinite Reactions, Emoji Statuses and Much More

Infinite Reactions, Emoji Statuses and Much More

Telegram's previous update revolutionized emoji, adding an open platform for creating custom animated emoji. This update gives you even more ways to use these new emoji to express how you're feeling – with infinite reactions and emoji statuses.

Infinite Reactions

All users now have access to dozens of reactions – including those that were previously only available with Telegram Premium, like 🤣 😐 🐳. To accommodate all the new emoji, we've redesigned the reaction panel, making it expandable. The reactions you use frequently will show up at the top.

Premium Telegram Premium users can pick reactions from an infinite selection of custom emoji. To make choosing from thousands upon thousands of emoji easier, they can now attach up to 3 reactions per message.

These changes to reactions are currently available in groups and 1-on-1 chats.

Group admins can control whether custom reactions may be used in their groups.

Premium Emoji Statuses

Starting today, Premium users can add an animated emoji status that is displayed next to their name – to quickly let everyone know how they're feeling or what they're doing. This custom status takes the place of your Premium Premium Badge in the chat list, in your profile and in groups.

You can set one of 7 standard statuses that change their color to match different Telegram themes – or choose from an infinite number of custom emoji. Popular suggestions for working, sleeping, traveling and more will be shown at the top.

Tap the Premium badge at the top of your chat list or go to Settings to change your status. Press and hold an emoji to set a status for a specific duration.

Anyone can use Telegram's open emoji platform to upload custom packs with unique art styles and characters for Telegram Premium users.

Improved Login Flow

Users who log out and log back in frequently can now receive login codes through their email address or using Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google.

Signing up or logging in to Telegram on iOS is now even more streamlined, with new interfaces and fun animations that are already familiar to our Android users.

New Username Links

All @usernames on Telegram have their own t.me/username links, making it easy to share your public profile, group or channel anywhere on the internet.

Every username now has a new unique link format – username.t.me – for those who want to emphasize their name (or have trouble finding the / key).

Prioritize Downloads on Android

Media and files that are actively downloading can be managed in the 'Downloads' tab of Search or by tapping the Downloads Android icon that appears in your chat list. You can now press and hold any items in the list to reorder them and change their priority – downloading the top file first.

This feature was already available on iOS – press and hold an item in the Downloads iOS list and select 'Prioritize Download'.

Android Goodies

New smooth animations have been added for opening, closing and changing media on Android.

Those on Android 13 or newer can choose a thematic Telegram icon that will automatically match your phone's dark mode settings and accent color.

And that's it for today. While everybody returns to their work and studies, we go back to our secret labs where the next update is already brewing.
